The mission of the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago is access to excellence and success. We educate students to innovate and to lead. We expand global knowledge of the engineering field through excellence in original research. In addition, as a public institution we prioritize our relationship with the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois. We foster strong local partnerships, provide crucial engineering expertise and facilities, and serve as a major economic driver for the region. Our current priorites include; recruiting bright students with unique stories and talents, attracting and retaining world-class teachers and researchers, building top-tier facilities, creating a strong alumni community, and establishing strong partnerships with government, industry and academia. A primary goal of the undergraduate study in engineering is to ensure that students are well-prepared for practice in the engineering profession, continued formal education at the graduate level; and continued education to adapt to evolving technologies and changing markets. College faculty and administration are continually reevaluating and revising curricula so that engineering and computer science degree programs consistently incorporate the changes that are occurring in technology and society. The college attracts students and faculty who represent a broad spectrum of nationalities, cultures, races, ages, and genders. Diversity is also reflected in the number and types of employment opportunities available to students. Area corporate partnerships support co-op and internship experiences that are tailored to individual student needs.

Educational Objectives
The UIC College of Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to join faculty in cutting edge research. In the classroom, students become familiar with the fundamental mathematical and scientific principles that are common to engineering and computer science disciplines, and they learn to apply these principles to current engineering and computer science problems of analysis, design, and experimentation. Through individual and group projects, students make use of current techniques, instruments, equipment, and computers, and gain proficiency in communicating the results of their work. Study in other disciplines provides students with an understanding of the professional and ethical responsibilities of practicing engineers. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a number of the many on-campus student chapters of national engneering professional organizations as a way to supplement their classroom experiences.

  1. Depth. In engineering practice, advanced study or original research, UIC Chemical Engineering bachelor’s degree graduates will be effective in applying fundamental principles, scientific knowledge, rigorous analysis, creative design, and conceptual innovation.
  2. Breadth. Based upon mastery of engineering in a broad, societal context, UIC Chemical Engineering graduates will have successful careers in the public or private sectors, or in the pursuit of graduate education.
  3. Professionalism. In the service of industry, government, the engineering profession and society at large, graduates will function effectively in the complex modern work environment with clear communication, responsible teamwork, and high standards of ethics, professionalism, safety and protection of the environment.

University

The University of Illinois system consists of the Urbana-Champaign, Chicago and Springfield campuses. The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago exists within the College of Engineering (COE). The ChE Department Head reports to the Dean of the College of Engineering, one of 16 colleges within the University of Illinois at Chicago. The COE is headed by Dean Peter Nelson who reports to the office of Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost of the University of Illinois at Chicago, currently headed by Susan Poser. Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost is the chief academic officer as well as the chief operating officer for the University of Illinois at Chicago. The Provost reports to the office of Chancellor of the University of Illinois at Chicago, Chancellor Michael Amiridis. The Chancellor reports to the office of President Timothy Killeen of the University of Illinois system. The administration of the University of Illinois system oversees the system-wide operations of the University and a handful of academic affairs units that reflect University-wide efforts. These offices report to the President or the Vice President of Academic Affairs, Administration, or Technology and Economic Development.

College of Engineering

The organizational structure of the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago is shown schematically in Figure 2. The Directors of Undergraduate Study responsible for the B.S. programs presented in this document, report to the Department Heads of their respective departments, who report, in turn, to the Dean of the College. The Dean is supported in his activity by Associate Deans with responsibilities for Research and Graduate Studies, Corporate Relations (also supervises the Engineering Career Center and Co-op Program), On-line Master of Engineering Program and International Programs (all graduate level programs), Administration (primarily budget and financial issues), and Advancement.

The Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs supervises the Director of the Minority Recruiting and Retention Program (MERRP). The Assistant Dean is supported by Assistant Directors for both the recruiting program and the MERRP program. The recruiting activities are carried out throughout the Chicago region to continuously enhance the number and quality of students entering the College’s programs. The MERRP program is in place to recruit and support minority enrollments in the College of Engineering.

The Director of Engineering Admission and Records also reports to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs. The Director of Admission and Records reviews the records of student applicants to the College of Engineering and makes admission decisions. His office also maintains the records of continuing students and reviews them for compliance with College policies and graduation standards. In this, he is supported by three academic counselors who meet with individual students to advise them on policies and requirements, and also conduct orientation and advising sessions with new freshmen and transfer students. He is also supported by an Office Manager, who is usually the first responder for students with problems. Together with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs, he sets policies for special petitions and enforces probation and academic drop rules.

Program Criteria for Chemical, Biochemical, Biomolecular, and Similarly Named Engineering Programs

These program criteria apply to engineering programs that include: chemical, biochemical, biomolecular, and similar modifiers in their titles.

1. Curriculum
The curriculum must provide a thorough grounding in the basic sciences including chemistry, physics, and/or biology, with some content at an advanced level, as appropriate to the objectives of the program. The curriculum must include the engineering application of these basic sciences to the design, analysis, and control of chemical, physical, and/or biological processes, including the hazards associated with these processes

2020 ABET Site Visit
For the previous ABET site visit (XX-XX-2026) the ABET Final Statement indicated a full 6-year accreditation, with no deficiencies, weaknesses, concerns or observations.
